Kayaking Introduction

Kayaking is rapidly becoming a popular sport in Puerto Rico. It's good exercise, it's harmless to the environment, and a lot of fun to boot. You can take a day or night outing alone, or arrange a trip with a tour guide. If you need to rent a kayak, rentals are available at various kayaking sites throughout the Island.

Condado Lagoon

Just imagine yourself paddling a sea kayak along side one of the many reefs that surround our coastline. Or, how about kayaking in San Juan's Condado Lagoon along side row boaters and windsurfers. You can rent a kayak near the Lagoon on Baldorioty de Castro Avenue.

Southwest

In the southwest region of Lajas, the coastal town of La Parguera, features a good kayaking site.  On a dark night kayakers can witness a brilliant display produced by millions of underwater bioluminescent microorganisms in the natural landmark, Phosphorescent Bay.  By day, just east of La Parguera, visitors can also kayak through various inlets along the coast, each an entrance to a maze of narrow channels known as the mangrove forest.

Vieques

You'll find another bioluminescent bay east of Puerto Rico on the island of Vieques. Here on the south side of the island kayakers are welcomed for an evening excursion in Mosquito Bay. Or, if you prefer, go during the day and paddle along some of the most beautiful beaches this side of the Caribbean.

Freshwater Kayaking

For those who prefer freshwater kayaking, great sites are available at various lakes across the Island. If you have your own kayak my guess is that you can put down just about anywhere that sail boaters and windsurfers do. One well known lake that offers opportunity for kayaking is located in Utuado. Dos Bocas Lake ("two mouths") offers a relaxing way to spend the day kayaking. For more information on Dos Bocas and new sites contact the Forest Reserve.
