Horse Events Puerto Rico's Paso Fino Horse dates back some 500
years to a time when the Spanish ruled over the land. Horses
were transported from Europe to the Island and eventually
developed into the unique breed we see today. The Paso Fino is regarded
as the most graceful riding horse in the
world. The steed is famous for its unique gait, a style that can
not be matched anywhere in the world. Currently, over 7,000
Paso Fino Horses live on the Island. Paso
Fino competitions are held at several locations around the Island. A
familiar category is the Bellas Formas or beauty contest.
Another category is the Paso Fino event in which the horses
are run through a series of trials to demonstrate its skills. Two
well know horse events include the Dulce Suefio fair which runs in early March in
Guayama, and the Festival La Candelaria which is celebrated in early February
in Manatí.
