North & Northwest Coast
Fabulous beaches along the north coast offers some good year-round
windsurfing, for beginners and intermediate windsurfers. Winds averaging 10- 1 5
knots. In the Condado Lagoon, in San Juan,
the water is relatively calm, but constant winds makes this a
heaven for novice windsurfers.
Intermediate surfers will want to try Condado's Ocean Park located a short
ways east of the Lagoon. Continue this heading for plenty of windy
points and rolling waves along the coast. Isla Verde has Punta Las Marias, Pine Grove
and
Isla Verde Beach. Deep reefs and few rocks presents less risk for injury along
this area. Bahía de Luquillo
and Costa Azul beaches off the northeastern town of Luquillo are other
popular spots.
Visitors can go windsurfing all along the coast west of San
Juan as well. These locations include Breñas and Kikitas off Dorado, Los Tubos and Sarapa
situated along Vega Alta
and Manatí. Several beaches along Arecibo's
coast include Peñón de Mero, Margara, La Marginal, Cueva
del Indio, the Hollows, and Machuca. If you're in
Hatillo, try
Las Cabras.
At the northwest region of the Island, points along Isabela including
Jobos, Surfer, and
Shacks beach, offers some great chances for windsurfing. But take heed! These
beaches, and most points off Aguadilla to Rincon are strictly for experts.
During the winter season, from November
to March, waves
can reach heights of up to 20 feet in some places.
